Who was the enigmatic Ramon Mercader who murdered Leon Trotsky? Marie-France Brière and Bruno Lagoarde follow in the footsteps of the enigmatic Ramon Mercader who murdered Leon Trotsky on 20 August 1940 in Mexico City. This Barcelona-born Communist activist, spotted by the KGB during the Spanish Civil War, constantly disappeared off the radar, changing his identity to get as close as possible to his future victim. After hitting Trotsky in the skull with an ice axe, an injury that would kill him the next day, Ramon Mercader was tied up by Trotsky’s guards who had been alerted by his screams. He spent the next twenty years in prison in Mexico City, never admitting his real name or who he was working for. An incredible itinerary, from Barcelona to Bordeaux, via Paris, Mexico City and Havana, living witnesses, family members and surprising friends have all agreed to talk… for the first time.
