Dune is 11 years old. Every summer, she has travelled across France with her parents to spend the holidays at their old house in the Landes region. There, Mathilde, aged 9, is waiting for her hand and foot. A friendship without fault. But it won’t be just another summer. Last year, Dune and her parents didn’t come. They didn’t tell her why, but she sensed that something had changed. Her distant mother, her parents’ arguments, Mathilde’s slow growth, the heady smell of pine trees, the sand that isn’t so soft any more, the ridiculous horror films, the love affairs of the local teenagers – all these things put Dune on the alert. She wants to understand, to know. That summer Dune grew up.
