Black Périgord, Château de Mespech, 1557. The Wars of Religion were threatening France. Behind the ramparts of Mespech castle, surrounded by a dangerous, hostile and intolerant world, the Siorac family fights for its survival and its convictions. Jean, the father, is forced to return to violence to defend his ideals. Isabelle, the mother, fights to exist in a world where men rule. Pierre and François, the sons, enter adulthood abruptly, torn like their country between their father’s Protestant faith and their mother’s Catholic fervour. There is the life of a community, masters and servants, parents and children, epidemics, adversaries, battles and bereavements, science and superstition and love stories.
